What drives the price
Long-distance carriers price on the weight of your shipment and the distance it travels, not on hourly labor. These are the base and per-mile figures this calculator uses when it does not yet have completed-move data for your route.
| Home size | Base cost | Per mile | 1,200-mile example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | $900 | $1.05 | $2,150 |
| 1 bedroom | $1,100 | $1.35 | $2,700 |
| 2 bedrooms | $1,600 | $2.30 | $4,350 |
| 3 bedrooms | $2,100 | $3.10 | $5,800 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $2,700 | $3.90 | $7,400 |
Where GetMove has at least 25 completed moves on a route, the calculator uses what people actually paid instead of this model, and says so on the result.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a long-distance move cost?
- A long-distance move typically costs $2,000–$3,000 for a studio, $4,000–$6,500 for a two-bedroom home, and $7,000–$11,000 for a four-bedroom home, at a distance of roughly 1,200 miles. Cost scales with distance and the weight of your shipment, and rises about 20% during the May–September peak season.
- Are online moving quotes free?
- Yes. The instant range on this page is free and needs no contact details. If you then ask for quotes, licensed interstate carriers send theirs at no cost to you. GetMove is a free referral service.
- What is the difference between an instant moving quote and a binding quote?
- An instant quote is an estimated range calculated from distance, home size and season (or from completed moves on your route, where we have enough). A binding quote is a fixed price a licensed carrier commits to after reviewing your inventory, usually by video or in-home survey. Use the instant range to budget and to sanity-check the binding quotes you receive.
- Do I have to give my email to see a price?
- No. The calculator shows your cost range immediately, before asking for any contact details. Contact information is only requested if you want binding quotes from licensed carriers.
- How accurate is the estimate?
- Where GetMove has data on a route, the range shown is the 25th-to-75th percentile of what people actually paid, and the page states how many moves it is based on. Where we do not yet have enough data for a route, the range comes from a published cost model and the page says so explicitly. Binding quotes still require a carrier to review your inventory.
- Is GetMove a moving company?
- No. GetMove is a free referral service. It provides cost estimates and passes your move details to licensed interstate carriers, who contact you with their own quotes.
